Ergotamine is an alkaloid originally isolated from ergot, the rye fungus that once gave medieval villagers some very colourful hallucinations. In the early 20th century, ampoules of ergotamine were prescribed to migraine sufferers, replacing earlier cures like vibrators, urine compresses, or a massive hole drilled in the top of your skull. Ergotamine also happens to be a key ingredient in the production of LSD, which itself is a great reliever of migraines, since it’s hard to have a headache when your skull has dissolved into a fluffy purple cloud of unicorn farts.
